Google vertical search makeovers

Google just released a new look to its Google news product and it makes for a better user experience.

I see this as yet another example of how Google is increasingly focusing on UI (user interface/ design). Google is not necessarily moving away from focusing on providing great results (as Yahoo and Lycos did that ultimately led to their ‘demise’) however they are now definitely focusing in on 2 areas they have been historically weak at – namely social media and UI.

At the same time as Google making their vertical search pillars ‘prettier’ they are also making them work harder for the user. E.g. making personalised search and advanced search much more in the users face and more user friendly.

Keep your eyes peeled for already announced upcoming makeovers to products including Google Reader, Gmail and Google image search.
