Yankee Doodle Pigeon
Last week Google rolled out a local search algorithm that is causing a stir (affectionately called the Google Pigeon update by Search Engine Land).
The dust has started to settle hence I wanted to investigate what the Pigeon’s up to….
Brands (Yelp, Tripadvisor, vertical directories et al) prominence + traffic has gone up and smaller players such as local directories and hotels have gone down.
This, in part, seems down to fewer local packs showing, the dial up and greater integration with the wider SEO ranking signals and knowledge graph increased utilisation.
This could be a good thing for the much vaunted hyper local search (with increased user local settings control) being a reality and coming to a neighbourhood near you; soon.
…At the moment though I’m not sure that the increased prominence and traffic to local directory sites is a good thing however perhaps this is a mere stepping stone to Pigeon 2.0. It’s basically still too early to say hence let’s see what comes out in the wash.
